Ready to See the Wizard, Frog, Pirates, and Fairies?! The Lost Colony
Company auditions for their chance down the yellow-brick road and other
fantastical places (Manteo, N.C., June 7, 2010) - Cat Yudain (left)and
the rest of The Lost Colony Company recently auditioned to be cast in
Waterside Theatre's 2010 productions of the MGM classic The Wizard of
Oz, The Tale of the Frog Prince, Simon's Pirate Adventure, and The
Queen's Fairy Quest. These productions are a part of the ancillary
theatrical events that will be performed at Waterside Theatre. Kevin
Long, at the piano, is assistant music director of The Lost Colony and
serves as music director of The Wizard of Oz, and The Tale of the Frog
Prince. Also at auditions were (L-R) Zach Kennedy (Production Stage
Manager), Jo Ellen Aspinwall (Director of The Tale of the Frog Prince),

The creative staff of Paul Green's The Lost Colony, assembled by Executive Director & Producer Carl V. Curnutte III is working for what promises to be a dynamic and riveting 2010 production season. In addition to Curnutte, the team includes the director, production designer, music director, choreographer, lighting and sound designers, and fight director that breath life into Pulitzer Prize-winning Paul Green's timeless script.

According to Curnutte, "It is the task of the artistic staff to interpret the author's play, maintain its integrity and create a meaningful and entertaining experience that will resonate for modern audiences." The 2010 artistic staff is capable of doing just that. Curnutte explains that The Lost Colony's artistic staff is top-notch and he is thrilled to bring their artestry to the production.

Robert Richmond returns as Director of The Lost Colony, America's longest-running symphonic outdoor drama. In theatrical circles Richmond is known for his ability to breathe new life into centuries-old theatrical works. The English-born director has staged more than 40 productions for off-Broadway, national tours, regional theatres, universities and special engagements-including a command performance of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing for a special reception at the White House for President Bush.

"We are thrilled with Richmond's direction of the production," said Chris Seawell, Chairman of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, which produces The Lost Colony. "We know our patrons can once again expect an entertaining and fantastic season."

He adds, "One of our Board members with an extensive family history in the drama commented that Robert Richmond 'got it-he understood what Paul Green wanted to say!'"

Richmond inspires his actors to exceed their expectations. Lost Colony Company Members will soon become familiar with Richmond's oft-coined inspirational motif, "We are in the pursuit of excellence!"

Excellence has followed throughout production designer William Ivey Long's career. Long's costume design work on Broadway has won him five Tony Awards. First associated with the production at age eight, he joined the company as a colonist boy. While his mother performed in front of the footlights as Queen Elizabeth I and his father worked as property master, technical director and director, Long spent numerous hours backstage under the eye of costume designer Irene Smart Rains, whose guidance and encouragement helped lay the foundation for his renowned and award winning career as a Broadway costume designer. The 2010 season will be Long's 40th year with the drama. Tony award-winning Broadway costume designer William Ivey Long returns for his 40th season with the production. First associated with the production as a young child of eight, Long's costume wizardry is now legendary. Beyond the bright lights of Broadway, he has also designed for such artists as Mick Jagger, Siegfried and Roy, the Pointer Sisters, and for choreographers Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Peter Martins, David Parsons and Susan Stroman.

Ken Clifton is glad to be back on the familiar sands of Roanoke Island. This marks his eighth-year Clifton as music director for The Lost Colony. Clifton recently moved to Charleston, SC. His career spans from Maine to Minnesota, Carolina to Florida and several points in between. Clifton is also a vocal coach, and worked with the national tours of Oliver!, The Full Monty, Rent, and Sweet Charity. He prepared Jennifer Hudson for her award-winning role in Dreamgirls-the movie. Clifton has coached vocals for the Steinhardt School of Music at NYU, and written two full-length musicals produced in Florida: Midnight Clear and a musical version of A Christmas Carol. His work has been heard at Walt Disney World Orlando, Tokyo Disney, and the Disney Cruise Line.

In 2010, Sean Kelly was the "new man on the block," but this year he returns to bring to the production his skills as versatile dancer, chorographer and master teacher. Last year, Kelly was the resident director for the touring Broadway musical Movin' Out by Tony Award-winner Twyla Tharp with music by Billy Joel. Previous to Movin' Out, Kelly was the dance supervisor and swing for the touring production of the musical Swing which performed extensively throughout the U.S. and Japan.

Kelly trained at the Marin Ballet, danced for two years with American Ballet Theater II and performed for many years with the Houston Ballet where he became principal dancer and eventually Ballet Master. He choreographed two ballets for the company. Kelly has been a guest artist, teacher and choreographer with numerous regional dance companies in the U.S., the Dominican Republic, and Guam. In his career, he has had the opportunity to perform works by many world renowned choreographers such as Ben Stevenson, George Balanchine, Paul Taylor, Christopher Bruce, and Stanton Welch.

Jim Hunter returns for his third season as lighting designer. Hunter's scene and lighting designs have been seen at such theatres as: Theatre Virginia, Phoenix Theatre, Charlotte Rep, Arkansas Rep, Florida Rep, Playhouse on the Square (Memphis), Drury Lane Theatre (Chicago), Heritage Repertory Theatre (VA), Flat Rock Playhouse (NC), as well as others. He designed the scenery for the national touring production of VeggieTales Live! Professor Hunter serves as Theatre and Dance Department Chair at the University of South Carolina and is artistic director of Theatre South Carolina.

Michael Rasbury will return to the artistic staff this year as sound designer. An assistant professor of theatre in sound design at the University of Virginia, Rasbury has extensive experience in recording, composition and sound design, and is a published ASCAP writer of most styles of music. While he has designed sound and/or composed music for numerous traditional theatres, he has also worked with a number of outdoor dramas-including Blue Jacket in Xenia, Ohio, where he was both composer and sound designer for 13 years.

Robert Midgette returns to The Lost Colony as fight director. This marks Midgette's 39th season with the production. For twenty-six years, he performed the role of Chief Manteo. His impressive theatrical record comes naturally - his father, mother, sister and brother were all involved in the production throughout the years. A native of Dare County, Midgette taught physical education and coached at Manteo for thirty years. He now works at First Flight High School. For four years, he served as fight captain and this year marks his fourth summer as fight director for the production. For his longtime service to The Lost Colony, the Roanoke Island Historical Association dedicated the 64th production season in Midgette's honor.

Take a dive into The Lost Colony's Gala "Under the Sea," a black-tie gala held from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday April 17 at the Wright Brothers Memorial Pavilion. At this annual fund-raising event guests enjoy sumptuous food, an open bar, silent auction, live auction, and the exciting sounds of the North Tower Band.

The North Tower band (pictured here) is familiar throughout the mid-Atlantic since their start over 30-years-ago as a Triangle area acapella quartet. The Lost Colony's Under the Sea, a black-tie gala will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday April 17 at the Wright Brothers Memorial Pavilion. At this annual fund-raising event guests enjoy sumptuous food, an open bar, silent auction, live auction, and dancing to the exciting sounds of the North Tower Band.

Create the Future Initiative Event to be Held on April 15

As part of the upcoming Land of Beginnings Festival, a Create
the Future Initiative event is planned for Thursday April 15 at the
Wright Brothers Pavilion in Kill Devil Hills. The event is a
collaboration between College of The Albemarle, the Create the Future
Committee, the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, and the Dare Education
Foundation.

Create the Future Initiative (CFI) is a group of Outer Banks business
people, non-profits, and educators who have the vision of a community
working together to prepare itself for the future, pursuing educational
and technological innovation, diverse cultural offerings and the
cultivation of natural resources. Our mission is to facilitate a
diverse, robust and sustainable regional economy preserving and
enhancing the future quality of life on the Outer Banks.

Create the Future Day on April 15, will blend these elements of the
vision and the mission of CFI. Joe Fredosso, Executive Director of the
Microelectronics Center of NC (MCNC), a catalyst for technology-based
economic development throughout the state, will talk about ways MCNC can
help with economic development in the region and ways to access venture
capital for new initiatives.

A panel of four OBX entrepreneurs will discuss ways they have "made it
happen" on the Outer Banks.

Andy Keeler, Professor of Public Policy at Ohio Statue University's John
Glenn School of Public Administration will give insight into how one
economist sees the economic future of the Outer Banks unfolding.

Additionally, Create the Future Day will kick-off an Outer Banks
"community read" event that will help the audience focus on core values
that will help us prosper in the future.

The CFI website will be utilized to enable attendees to blog and post on
various topics of the day making this a most interactive event.

Lunch will be provided at no charge for those who pre-register. The
Dare County Arts Council will provide lunchtime entertainment which will
be followed by an opportunity for networking and collaboration.

Participants are urged to bring their web-enabled laptops for wireless
connection. Lunch will be provided for participants who pre-register by
April 14 by calling College of The Albemarle at 473.2264 extension 0.

Land of Beginnings Festival's Living Legend Community Luncheon set for
April 12

The Land of Beginnings Festival invites all to attend the Living Legend
Community Luncheon at noon on Monday, April 12. Glenn Eure, generous and
talented Outer Banks artist and supporter of the arts has been chosen to
receive the fourth annual Living Legend Award to be presented at this
luncheon. Eure joins other Living Legend Honorees: Omie Tillet, Edward
Greene and David Stick who collectively have made the Outer Banks a
better place, each in their unique way.

"Each year, we received many worthy nominees for the award,"
said Carl Curnutte, executive director and producer of The Lost Colony,
and of the Land of Beginnings Festival Committee chairman. "Although
each nominee contributed greatly to what makes the Outer Banks unique,
Eure's artistic contributions and passionate love of the Outer Banks
made his choice clear for the committee.

Many are familiar with Eure's Monument to a Century of Flight in Kitty
Hawk completed in 2003 for the centennial of flight celebrations. Others
know him as proprietor of the Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head. Here,
in a building of his own design, he exhibits his work in a variety of
media- collagraphs, woodcuts, etchings, watercolors, sculptural oil
canvases, and relief carvings on themes from nautical to abstract.
Eure's Gallery is known as a center for the arts and features special
exhibits of guest artists, both accomplished and emerging while
providing a forum for community arts events and literary arts
presentations. His first art show of the year is devoted to the work of
students from grades K-12.

Now age 76, he saw completion of a project of biblical proportion.
Eure's carving and completion of the 14 Stations of the Cross for Holy
Redeemer gives powerful testimony to his unfaltering faith and his
tireless artistry. These are but a few examples of the palette of his 35
years of artistry in the land of beginnings.

The family-style luncheon and gathering of business, civic, and
community organizations seeks to celebrate the best of Eastern North
Carolina. Keynote speaker is five-time Tony Award-winner William Ivey
Long. Long will speak about his first hand knowledge of the Outer Banks
and his long-standing devotion to The Lost Colony drama that has drawn
him here since childhood. Also at the event, Bill Rea, East Carolina
Bank V.P. and Marketing Executive for the Outer Banks will present the
third annual Living Legend Scholarship from the Living Legend Endowment
Fund established by the banking corporation and managed by the Outer
Banks Community Foundation.

The Living Legend luncheon event is one of many to be held from April 9
to April 17 as part of the Land of Beginnings Festival, An Outer Banks
Original. The nine-day festival celebrates the rich history and cultural
heritage of the Outer Banks and explores ways to preserve and promote
it.

This year's Living Legend Luncheon sponsors are Dare County, East
Carolina Bank, National Park Service Outer Banks Group, Outer Banks
Community Foundation, Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, and the Roanoke
Island Historical Association.

accolades of Glen Eure at the Living Legend Community Luncheon, noon on

Lost Colony Casts Talent

(Manteo, N.C., March 2, 2010) - The annual search for talent take's The
Lost Colony's production staff across the state and beyond. Auditions
for 2010 have already taken the long-running drama's production team to
New York, Connecticut, and Tennessee. Upcoming auditions are scheduled
for Kentucky and in North Carolina. Local auditions for the drama took

In an exciting partnership with the HandsOn Network, The Lost Colony has
been approved as a participating volunteer opportunity in Disney's "Give
a Day. Get a Disney Day" volunteer program.

The program celebrates the spirit of volunteer service with an exciting
benefit: one million people who perform volunteer service for a
participating organization will receive a free one-day admission ticket
to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park. The
program kicked off on January 1, 2010.

To participate, Lost Colony volunteers sign up for opportunities on
www.DisneyParks.com where opportunities are posted. You must be 18 years
of age or older to sign up. Children must be at least 6 years of age to
participate in this program, however The Lost Colony's volunteer
opportunities are limited to ages 10 and above. The program runs through
December 15, 2010 or until all tickets are distributed.

"We have many dedicated volunteers already and we are excited to offer
our volunteers this opportunity," says Lost Colony Volunteer Director
Mary Salem. "We are hoping that this program will entice others to
assist us in our volunteer opportunities." Other area organizations that
participate in the program include the SPCA of Northeastern NC, Habitat
for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Destination ImagiNation Inc in
Chesapeake, Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads, Inc., American
Red Cross, Suffolk Chapter and many others. The Lost Colony is the first
organization in Dare County to participate in the program.
